The Lego - Einer ist zuviel geocache (GC13Y2Y) gathered close to 35,000 finds and 12,000 favorite points, which makes it unquestionably the most popular cache in the world. With that kind of success, it could only earn a place of honour on geocaching.io as a legendary geocoin.
Sadly, it was officially archived by Geocaching HQ on 21 October 2021, after more than 14 years of activity.
The archiving came down to the physical strain on the structure. To find the geocache, you had to identify and handle the single unglued brick on a life-size Lego giraffe standing outside the Legoland Discovery Centre in Berlin. Given the cache's enormous success, the endless stream of thousands of geocachers scrutinising and touching the sculpture every day made maintenance impossible. It was also a matter of protecting this promotional installation from premature wear caused by the game.
The original is gone today, but a new tribute cache has been placed nearby to celebrate this urban legend and give a symbolic “Walk of Fame” to this piece of geocaching history: GC9J866 by Bernd2010, awarded geocache of the week by Groundspeak.
