Project MUNICH2014 – Mia san Giga!

Project MUNICH2014 - Mia san Giga! (GC4K089) brought together geocachers from all over the world on 16 August 2014, in Munich's Olympiastadion. It is the event that gave its name to a whole category of the game: before it, the word "Giga" did not exist in the official geocaching vocabulary.

It had all started as an ordinary Mega-Event, planned for the Olympic park. Registrations exploded months in advance, to the point where the organisers had to suspend will attends while they looked for a solution.
And what a solution! The coordinates were moved 600 metres further west, into... the stadium itself.
On 22 April 2014, Geocaching HQ announced a new cache type tailored to the occasion, the Giga-Event, reserved for gatherings of 5,000 attendees and more. The threshold was cleared without difficulty, and the name chosen by the Munich team, a nod to the Bavarian "Mia san mia", has stayed attached to the very first Giga of all.

Three hundred and fifty volunteers set up a zip line, Bavarian games - holding a beer stein at arm's length, milking a wooden cow, and so on -, stalls and a tent for the children, while some thirty lab caches waited to be found across Munich.

Munich came back to celebrate that Giga on the same spot five years later, at the stadium entrance, and Giga-Events have multiplied across Europe since.
