Which geocacher placed the very first geocaches of Luxembourg and Belgium, in 2000?
The answer : Pierre Cao
The Geocache geocache (GC44) sits at a set of round coordinates: N 50° 00.000 E 006° 00.000 — it is the first geocache in Luxembourg.
At the time, caches were not given names: in the listings of the year 2000, dozens of boxes are simply called Geocache, followed by the owner's name. Pierre Cao, the owner, signed three of them in two months: on 17 June, the first one in Belgium (GC3F); on 7 July, an ammo can wedged between roots in Belgium (GC40); then this one. The European continent had only a handful at that point.
Nobody found it for close to eight months: the first found it dates from 9 April 2001. The following summer, Dutch, German and Belgian geocachers made it their “Benelux weekend”: three countries, three caches. Their logs tell of a bicycle abandoned five hundred metres from the goal, legs scratched by brambles, a gang of kids who had to be shaken off before the box could be opened, and this line from one visitor: geocaching had taken him where he would never otherwise have gone.
Damaged too often, the box was given up in 2002; a virtual cache took over at the same point that same year, and the Luxembourg community gathered there in May 2015 for the game's fifteenth anniversary.
