El Sol y Cache de Cancun

The El Sol y Cache de Cancun geocache (GC120) was placed on 25 December 2000 on a deserted beach south of Cancún, by an American tourist who had come to spend Christmas with his family. The game was seven months old, geocaching.com barely four, and Mexico still had no box at all: "we believe this is the first cache in Mexico", the owner wrote; Geocaching HQ has confirmed it since. Everything was improvised on the spot: a Tupperware picked up at the local supermercado, a Mexican school exercise book as a logbook, and the rules of the game translated into Spanish with what was left of high-school classes.

On 26 March 2001, a Ryan International Airlines crew member on a stopover walked down the beach, GPS in hand, and found the box intact: he signed the notebook and left a red bandana. At the end of May, a newlywed on honeymoon rented a scooter, set off along the six kilometres of beach, gave up halfway and hung the gift he had meant to leave in the box in a bag on a tree, asking whoever came next to carry it the rest of the way. On 11 June, the geocacher who had taken the FTF came back: the container was there, empty, with no trace of its contents. The owner then wrote that it was a shame, but that the spot was still worth the visit. Nobody wrote anything after that, and the cache ended up archived.
