Snake Island

The Snake Island geocache (GC4V3FE) is the only cache on the only island in North Macedonia (Golem Grad), a few kilometres from Greece and Albania. You can land there only by boat, chartered from the villagers of Konsko or Stenje.

The island deserves its nickname: it shelters the country's largest population of dice snakes, along with nose-horned vipers. Emptied of its inhabitants since its monastic community left in the middle of the 20th century, it has kept its churches, an early Christian basilica and ruins that have been excavated since 1967. The island is also home to many cormorants, Hermann's tortoises and Dalmatian pelicans.

A nature reserve at the heart of Galičica National Park, the island can be visited only with the agreement of the park administration. Geocaching HQ made it its geocache of the week in November 2021, along with the launch of the "North Macedonia" souvenir, then kept it in its selection of the year.
