Geocache

The Geocache geocache (GC42) was placed on 15 May 2000 in Vitacura, north-east of Santiago, twelve days after Dave Ulmer buried in Oregon the bucket that started the game. It is the first cache in South America.

Its name, simply "Geocache", comes from a time when caches did not yet have titles. The whole listing fitted on a single line on the page where Mike Teague inventoried the hiding places by hand: the coordinates, the date, "white bucket", and Carlos Orrego's invitation, "check this one for wine and maps!". The title "Geocache" came later, when geocaching.com took over the list. Chile is the second country outside the United States on it, three days after New Zealand.

Nobody has ever found GC42. In December 2018, Chilean geocachers gathered with spades in hand for a collective dig; the organiser had spotted on site the brick monolith mentioned in the notes, but the white bucket itself was never recovered.
