Sun Gear

The Sun Gear geocache (GC72) was placed on 30 September 2000 by Kalle Reunanen in the woods at Kerava, a railway and industrial town some thirty kilometres north of Helsinki. It is the first geocache in Finland.

Its owner, a hiker equipped with a GPS, had read an article on Slashdot on 25 September 2000 pointing to a site then called GPS Stash Hunt. Five days later the box was in the forest: he liked rocky outcrops and had looked on the map for a spot that would suit. The cache takes its name from what he put inside: a pair of sunglasses, a keyring and mint sweets. The first find was not logged until January 2001, and it took until the following October for a Finn to sign the logbook - Reunanen himself tells the story of those early days.
