La Soufrière

The La Soufrière geocache (GC27MH6) leads to the highest point of the Lesser Antilles: 1,467 metres, a lava dome that the people of Guadeloupe call the "old lady". Up there, no clear-cut crater, but eruptive vents, fissures and sulphurous fumaroles in the mist, an almost lunar landscape set above the forests of Basse-Terre.

This explosive volcano has marked the island with several eruptions, one of which forced 73,000 inhabitants to evacuate in 1976. Since then, the volcano observatory installed on the heights has never taken its eyes off the mountain. The earthcache, for its part, has to be earned: the Chemin des Dames climbs to the summit from the Bains Jaunes, some 500 metres of ascent, and you must gather on the spot what you need to answer the owner - starting with the smell of the gas escaping from the fumaroles.
From up there, the view over the whole of Guadeloupe is incredible, and the sulphurous fumaroles make the landscape unique.
