Rano Kau - Rapa Nui

The Rano Kau - Rapa Nui geocache (GC22ZGB) stands on the rim of Rano Kau, an extinct volcano that forms the south-western tip of Easter Island, inside Rapa Nui National Park. Its 324 metres of basalt open onto a crater nearly a kilometre wide: two hundred metres below, marsh and a reed-bristling lake make up one of only three natural freshwater reserves on Rapa Nui. Sheltered from the winds that parch the rest of the island, the crater has made a climate of its own: fig trees and vines thrive down there. On that same rim stand the stone houses of Orongo, ceremonial village of the birdman cult.

Dutzig placed an earthcache here in January 2010. "The regular shape of the crater, the nature and depth of the lake, and of course its extraordinary beauty": that, he says, is what decided him on this spot. Geocaching HQ made it its geocache of the week in March 2013.
