Tour of Stone Mountain

The Tour of Stone Mountain geocache (GC1E) was placed on 11 June 2000 at the foot of the granite dome that towers over the plain east of Atlanta, Georgia. Less than six weeks after the very first cache of the game, it opened an entire genre: Geocaching HQ recognises it as the world's first multi-cache. It is also the second cache placed in Georgia, and it is still in play.

The cache itself came close to vanishing. A simple box left by Chris Reynolds under the name "Stone Mountain", it was carried off by a passer-by at the end of summer 2003 and was heading for permanent archiving. LostNfound then adopted it and rethought it as a staged route leading to the lesser-known corners of the park, two to three hours of walking and driving before a large ammo can. Several geocachers have since repaired the damaged stages on their own time to keep it alive.
