The Retro-Games multi-cache (GC976P1) took its visitors back to the 1980s, somewhere in Bavaria, Germany. Seven stages, seven games to be played on the spot, electronic or carved out of wood: a one-button platform game, a Pac-Man, a Simon, the ghost Blinky, the Snake of the first mobile phones, a Super Mario 1-Up, a wall of bricks in the manner of Breakout. Each game won handed over the coordinates of the next stage.

Behind the circuits, a couple of geocachers, Dirk and Sabine, alias TeamNetzZwerg, who have been placing carefully crafted caches since 2017. The idea had been on their minds for more than four years, born when Dirk started programming microcontrollers: his friends got so caught up in the prototypes that he decided to turn them into a cache. The instructions given to visitors said it all: bring a charged power bank and USB cables, as several stages do not light up on their own.

Geocaching HQ made it its geocache of the week in March 2022. The logs, for their part, mostly spoke of nostalgia, and the favorites piled up. Retro-Games is archived today, but it will leave an unforgettable memory to those who were lucky enough to walk the route.

Fancy a warm-up for the real quiz? Here is a question:

How many stages, each with its own game to be played on site, did this cache have?

The answer : 7
