Power Island

The Power Island geocache (GC35) was placed on 16 July 2000 on a wooded island in Grand Traverse Bay, in northern Michigan in the United States, ten weeks after Dave Ulmer buried the world's very first cache in Oregon. It has never been archived since: it is the doyenne of Michigan geocaches, and the twenty-second oldest still in play on the planet.

The island itself has changed name almost as often as owner: Island No. 10 on government maps, Hog Island back when pigs were pastured there, Marion Island from 1872. In 1917, Henry Ford bought it and gave it his name. Ford sold it again in 1944 and the island passed from hand to hand. A gift of 250,000 dollars from Eugene and Sayde Power allowed its purchase by The Nature Conservancy, which handed it to the county in 1975. A few years later, the island was renamed Power Island in their honour.

It can only be reached by boat from Bowers Harbor, and that is probably what saved the cache. Many charter a boat for this one alone, and very often for groups of geocachers.
