GeoWoodstock 4

GeoWoodstock 4 (GCRRC6) was held over Memorial Day 2006, and added a cache type to the vocabulary of the game: Geocaching HQ made it the very first Mega-Event in its history.

GeoWoodstock had been born three years earlier in the mind of Joe Armstrong, a Tennessee geocacher known as JoGPS: he wanted to gather the country's ten best players in one place, then decided it would be better to invite everyone. The first edition took place on 21 June 2003 at Waterfront Park in Louisville, Kentucky; since then, the series has changed city every year. In 2006, Texas tipped it into a category that did not yet exist, the one Geocaching HQ reserves for the largest gatherings.

The programme sets the tone for those four days: a cooking competition on the Thursday evening, a group hunt to launch the Friday morning, a barbecue on the Saturday, a travel bug festival, outings to the cache-densest corners of the region, and a few daredevils setting out to beat the record of 267 caches found in twenty-four hours.
And the GeoWoodstock madness goes on: in 2018, in Ohio, it became the first Giga-Event held in the United States.
