Set in Bolivia, more than 3,600 metres above sea level, the Virtual Reward - Salar de Uyuni cache (GC7B9WP) offers a geocaching experience like no other, in the heart of the largest salt desert in the world. This extreme playground of more than 10,000 km² is a perfectly flat, blindingly white expanse, structured by an endless mosaic of dried salt polygons. The site imposes harsh weather conditions, combining a wide temperature range with intense glare that makes sunglasses indispensable. In exchange, the total absence of relief and obstacles guarantees a perfect GPS signal on the approach to ground zero.
To claim this virtual cache and log a Found it, the task set by the owner draws directly on the visual quirks of the desert. With no landmarks on the horizon, it becomes possible to create optical illusions and forced-perspective photographs by playing with distance. Geocachers therefore have to record their visit with amusing, creative shots that include a few set pieces. And depending on the area and the season, a film of water may cover the salar, turning the ground into a giant endless mirror and offering an even more spectacular geological setting for these photographic challenges.
