Geocaching on the Angkor site in Cambodia has a dynamic of its own, mainly because there is no local community. The physical boxes, generally placed by passing players between 2011 and 2016, often run into maintenance problems, which explains why more recent publications on the site tend to be limited to virtual caches. On the ground, play varies a great deal: inside the major, busy monuments, searching calls for extreme discretion so as not to arouse the suspicion of the crowds of tourists.

Away from the usual circuits, some geocaches open the way to isolated, wild places. Ta Nei - Temple of Butterflies (GC2T5NR), placed in 2011 and holding a great many favorite points, is a perfect example. Hidden in a small ruined temple reclaimed by the vegetation, finding it often means using an offline GPS and leaning on the description, the hint, the spoiler photos and the older logs. Digging out the container and signing the logbook in that quiet, unspoilt setting is the very essence of exploration, rewarding the player with a little-known monument — while keeping a careful eye on the local wildlife.
