How many permissions did Geocaching HQ draw by lot for Virtual Rewards 2.0, in June 2019?
The answer : 4000
The GeoAventure #3 : Le Fantôme de l'Opéra geocache (GC890VN) was hidden on 18 October 2019 by qgx in front of the Palais Garnier, in Paris (France). It is a virtual cache, a type withdrawn from the game in 2005: new ones are only created at the invitation of Geocaching HQ. This one comes from Virtual Rewards 2.0, 4,000 permissions drawn by lot in June 2019.
The setting was not chosen at random. The Palais Garnier, designed by Charles Garnier and inaugurated on 5 January 1875, inspired Gaston Leroux's novel. Leroux drew a great deal of truth from it. On 20 May 1896, during a performance of Hellé, one of the chandelier's counterweights came through the ceiling of the auditorium and killed a spectator in the fourth-level boxes. Box no. 5, which the Phantom keeps for himself in the book, really does exist.
On site there is neither box nor logbook: the cache opens a GeoAventure, the third in a series by the same owner — a run through an online video game that has to be completed before you can log. A surprise awaits you at the end of the Adventure, but I will say no more.
