The Raiders of the Lost Place II geocache (GC3YFB5) was a mystery placed by Saarfuchs in the Grand Est region of France in October 2012, rated 4 for difficulty and 4.5 for terrain, with more than 2,000 finds and close to 1,400 favorite points.
As its name suggests, it explored a lost place: it was hidden deep inside a huge underground military work of the Maginot Line. The cache invited geocachers to try urban exploration in this relic of the Second World War. It had to be archived for good, however, because the fortification stands on land still owned by the army, where access is strictly forbidden and potentially dangerous for the public.
Historically, the site belongs to the vast network of fortifications and defences built by the French government in the 1930s to protect its eastern borders against a German invasion. These large installations, designed to be self-sufficient, included kilometres of underground galleries, barracks, power plants and combat turrets.
