The Special Mission: PLANET OF THE APES Premiere! geocache (GC1168) held two tickets to the world premiere of Tim Burton's film Planet of the Apes, on 23 July at 7:30 p.m. at the Ziegfeld Theatre. During the summer of 2001, 20th Century Fox had scattered fourteen ammo cans marked Project A.P.E., each holding a prop from the film.
The tickets went to the first to arrive, and the listing made no secret of the urgency: “Don't wait until tomorrow. Don't wait until tonight. Go now.” Everyone else would have to wait for the theatrical release, on 27 July. cache_ninja settled the matter the very next day, with a log written in leetspeak: “f0unD tiX!”.
The rest played out at dawn. On 21 July, Team ECO Cache got word at 4 a.m., set off at 4:45 and signed at 5:30, noting that the cache had been easier to find than a parking space. The same day, Cucumber also got hold of the box. The next day, cache_cop made their very first find as a geocacher there, after an hour of searching, and recognised the container from having seen it on television. In early August the ammo can was still there, empty. It was archived shortly afterwards, its mission accomplished; Geocaching HQ was still celebrating its anniversary twenty years later.
