The Gokyo Lakes

The geocache The Gokyo Lakes (GC1ZDJJ) is placed at nearly 4,800 metres above sea level, on the shore of the Gokyo Lakes, in Sagarmatha National Park. These nineteen turquoise stretches of water, lying at close to 5,000 metres at the foot of the Ngozumpa glacier, form the highest freshwater lake system in the world. Hindus and Buddhists hold them sacred: every summer, pilgrims climb up to bathe in them.

You can only get there on foot. After the flight to Lukla, the valley is climbed on a very long trek: about 90 kilometres there and back, more than 2,000 metres of ascent and four days of walking before the lakes appear. Above the village, Gokyo, four summits of more than 8,000 metres come into view in the distance, Everest among them.

The box, for its part, is found without trouble: a Tupperware a few metres from the village, rated 2 for difficulty and 5 for terrain. jmrcristobal placed it there in September 2009 and points out that he goes up to Gokyo three or four times a year for his work - enough to look after a cache in a region that has very few. Geocaching HQ made it its geocache of the week in March 2023.
