Original stash tribute plaque

The Original Stash Tribute Plaque geocache (GCGV0P) marks the exact spot where it all began. On 3 May 2000, Dave Ulmer buried a five-gallon bucket here and published its coordinates on the internet: modern geocaching was born.

The contents of that first bucket have stayed famous: a Delorme map, two CD-ROMs, a cassette recorder, a VHS tape of George of the Jungle, a Ross Perot book, four one-dollar bills, a slingshot handle and a can of beans that became the best-known trackable in the game. Mike Teague, the first finder, took the money and left cigarettes, a cassette and a pen.

The original bucket was destroyed by an Oregon road crew. Geocaching HQ had a commemorative plaque installed in its place, and a nearby container holds the logbook to sign — more than 15,500 signatures to date. This is the second stop of the Trifecta, a pilgrimage that also requires visiting Geocaching HQ and Mission 9: Tunnel of Light.
