The YOSM #0054 Ben Nevis - Britain's Highest Geocache geocache (GCG6XD) has been waiting since May 2003 on the summit of Ben Nevis, 1,345 metres above Fort William: the highest point in Scotland and in all the British Isles. It was voted geocache of the week in October 2021.
The stony plateau where it is hidden was once inhabited. From 1883 to 1904 a weather observatory ran there without a break, recording every hour, day and night, pressure, temperature, wind and cloud. It closed for lack of money. Nothing is left of it but ruins, topped by an emergency shelter, and the pony track opened to supply it has become the normal route to the top.
The name comes from the YOSM series, for Ye Ole Survey Monuments: numbered caches placed beside the survey markers that served to map Great Britain. Ben Nevis has its own, a pillar planted on the great summit cairn - hence number 0054.
