[BERRY] Galleria Montale 🚂

The [BERRY] Galleria Montale 🚂 geocache (GC9FN88) hides in San Marino, in a tunnel that only served for twelve years. Opened on 12 June 1932, the Rimini-San Marino line climbed from the Adriatic up to Mount Titano: some thirty kilometres, seventeen tunnels, and white and blue railcars in the colours of the Sammarinese flag. The bombings of June 1944 carried it away: the last train ran during the night of 11 to 12 July.

The Montale tunnel, the last one before San Marino station, then served as a shed: the rolling stock stayed shut inside for nearly seventy years, until June 2011. The tunnel reopened to pedestrians the following year, lit and staged, and the restored train went back into service in December 2022.

That is where marberry94 placed the cache in 2021, lodged in a hollow of the wall, found by following the light. A side passage leads to a balcony open over the valley. Much appreciated, it was geocache of the week in April 2024.
