The Monte Cristo geocache (GCBC) takes you on a journey through the history of Washington State. Hidden on 19 November 2000 by Jeremy Irish (co-founder of the game) and Samsy, it is a classic, historic stop for enthusiasts. Sought after today to complete the Jasmer challenge — which consists of finding caches placed in every month since the game began — it has gathered a great many visits and favorite points over the decades.

The adventure takes you to the old mining town of Monte Cristo. Born in 1898 thanks to seams of galena, this small town, once backed by John D. Rockefeller, quickly turned into a ghost town.

An unusual aside: in 2015, when the site was temporarily closed for decontamination work, the Geocaching HQ team mounted an expedition through the snow to secure the original container. Not your everyday geocache!
